Brief introduction of the School

The GMU-GIBH Joint School of Life Sciences was established on July 26, 2016 by Guangzhou Medical University and Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The school encompasses several departments, including Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Medical Genetics and Cell Biology, Regenerative Medicine, and the Biological Experiment Center, with two campuses located at Guangzhou Medical University and Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences (abbreviated as "Guangzhou Health Institute").

The Guangzhou Medical University campus provides instruction in public courses and professional basic courses, catering to students with a professional focus on medical biotechnology. In contrast, the Guangzhou Health Institute is responsible for the training of "Excellence Class" students specializing in biotechnology. The college's biotechnology program is a national first-class specialty, with a strong focus on cultivating biotechnology professionals, supported by robust teacher strength, teaching reform, internal management, and other facets. The school has established a doctoral degree construction site, with an emphasis on educating and cultivating graduate students to improve their abilities of scientific research and innovation.

Currently, the school has 111 faculty members, including 71 full-time teachers (comprising 12 professors from Guangzhou Laboratory). Notably, 98.59 % of full-time teachers hold doctoral degrees, while all teachers hold master's degrees. The school covers an area of over 5000 square meters, featuring a laboratory area of over 4300 square meters. The key disciplines of the school include regenerative biology, cell biology, molecular medicine, genetic diagnosis, and respiratory physiology. The primary goals of the school are to cultivate high-level, sophisticated, and applied talents with characteristics and advantages in medical research, development, and medical application, to perform high-level research and development, and to establish a high-level platform of biotechnology teaching and research in South China.

Additionally, the school has collaborated with multiple hospitals and enterprises which serve as internship teaching bases. Presently, the school enrolls 106 graduate students and 333 regular full-time undergraduate students.
